| Review in ELEGY #37 - (August 2005) | |
Olivier Camus |
PARADE GROUND Other reformation from the eighties Belgian underground, Parade Ground honor us with the first rough sketch of its new and only second album 'Rosary'. The previous and unique one 'Cut Up' dated back from 1988. Where others have decided to stick to today's electronic sound, Jean-Marc and Pierre Pauly remain faithful to the cold-wave / post-punk sound of their first steps, the whole of it being ornamented with some discreet machines. Musically closer to a first era Killing Joke or a Trisomie 21 rather than a Front 242 from which Parade Ground had always stayed in the benevolent shadow. From the 15 titles planned, we have only been able to enjoy 7 but that was enough to make us dive for a trip to the confines of human madness, of psychiatric confinement … Just forget about the very new-wave 'Strange World', 'Rosary' brings us back to earth with the desperate 'Snail’s Burial' illustrated by a guitar saturated with lamentation; 'Naked' and its bittersweet melody drowned in a sheet of sticky synth. 'Breath' which makes its backbone out of a little mournful melody … A monument of tortured anguish that touches the soul … Olivier Camus |

7 - PARADE GROUND Let there be no doubt about it; Parade Ground doesn't revive to deliver us a déjà-vu new-wave, 'Windfall' is a pure introspective torture. Did we have to wait until 2005 to see post-punk become so cryptic? Certainly Parade Ground has the answer to it ... |
